Farhad B. Naini is Consultant Orthodontist and Clinical Lead for the Maxillofacial Unit at Kingston Hospital, Consultant Orthodontist at the Gillies Unit, Queen Mary’s, King’s College Hospital, and Visiting Professor at Kingston University London, UK. He is a Fellow and examiner of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and of Edinburgh, an examiner for the University of London and multiple national/international universities, and Secretary General of the European Federation of Orthodontists. His main clinical interests are facial aesthetic analysis, orthognathic surgery, and orthodontics in patients with special needs. He has over 140 peer-reviewed publications, over 50 book chapters, and is the editor of the textbook ‘Orthodontics: Principles and Practice’; editor of the 900-page tome ‘Orthognathic Surgery: Principles, Planning and Practice’; editor of the textbook ‘Preadjusted Edgewise Fixed Orthodontic Appliances’; and author of the textbook ‘Facial Aesthetics: Concepts and Clinical Diagnosis’.
Lecture: Beauty and aesthetics: From Socrates to the 21st Century
How do we know what is attractive in dentofacial aesthetics? Where does our evidence come from? What are the principal parameters required to achieve desirable results and meet our patients’ expectations. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an exploration of the philosophical, artistic and scientific perspectives on facial aesthetics, the analysis of facial form and dysmorphology, and the interaction of art and science in orthognathic surgery.
