Nejat Erverdi
Short CV
Dr.Erverdi completed his PhD in orthodontics in Hacettepe university Ankara in 1985. In 1987 he joined the Marmara University Faculty of Dentistry Department of orthodontics and until 2016 he worked there and retired as full professor. In 2017 he joined the Okan university faculty of dentistry. He is one of the founders of the Turkish Orthodontic Society. In 2000 he was elected as the councilor of the European orthodontic society. In 2003 he was accepted as the full member to the North Atlantic Component of the Edward Angle Society. He was elected as the president of the European Orthodontic Society for the year of 2011.His book about Archwise Distraction Osteogenesis was published by Springer company in the years of 2014-2022.His book Contemporary Orthodontics in Turkish language was published in the year of 2017-2020.Dr.Erverdi is still the programme chair of the postgraduate orthodontic programme in Okan university faculty of dentistry.
Lecture 1: Archwise Distraction Osteogenesis
Distraction osteogenesis is a magic tool in medicine. It is used in different areas of dentistry and medicine.For the treatment of some clinical problems,it is the only clinical method which is indicated.General knowledge about distraction osteogenesis is that;It is a linear procedure.Here the question comes;Is it possible to achieve archwise distraction?
We had begun to study on this topic almost about 20 years ago and at the end we were able to develop a successful method to achieve curvilinear distraction.
AWDA – Archwise Distraction Appliance – is a rigid, tooth-borne, custom-made appliance that is developed to control the distraction vector with double archwire system.
In this presentation this method will be introduced and discussed on some different clinical cases.
Lecture 2: Zygomatıc Implant Supported Openbıte Treatment
Skeletal openbite is known as the most challenging mallocclusion to treat.General principle in treatment is to correct the affected morphegenic pattern. True treatment requires the impaction of the overerupted maxillary posterior segment, achieve anterior rotation of the mandible and correct the affected skeletal pattern. Orthognahtic surgery is the only proven method which is used to impact the maxilla succesfully and achieve the anterior rotation of mandible and correct the malocclusion.
Zygomatic implant supported openbite treatment is a method which was developed as an alternative to orthognahtic surgery. In this procedure, two orthodontic miniplates are fixed in the zygomatic buttress area bilaterally and the extentions are bent in the form of a hook. Openbite appliance with acrylic caps covering the posterior teeth bilaterally, including the canines are connected by two palatal bars. Coil springs are extended between the appliance and the hooks of the zygomatic implants. In this force system three independent forces are created to be used for the impaction of maxillary posterior segment;
• Force coming from coil springs
• Functional force transmitted through the body of the tongue to the palatal bars
• Force created by muscle tonus.
In this presentation, zygomatic implant supported openbite treatment method will be described in detail and some treated cases will be presented along with long term follow up results.
