Lecture: Contribution of plastic periodontal surgery to orthodontic treatment

The predictable and successful orthodontic treatment often requires the close cooperation of the orthodontist with other dental specialists. The collaboration of the orthodontist with the periodontist ensures the fundamental prerequisite of orthodontic treatment, i.e. periodontal health. Moreover, this collaboration entails dealing with situations and problems that arise before, during and after the orthodontic treatment that are resolved with plastic/reconstructive periodontal surgery. These situations mainly include frenectomy in order to achieve long-term stability of the treatment outcome, impacted tooth exposure to enable orthodontic appliance placement, as well as, crown-lengthening procedures due to gingival enlargement that may occur during or after orthodontic treatment. Finally, an important contribution of reconstructive periodontal surgery to orthodontic treatment is the management of soft tissue deficiencies. This management can work preventively at the beginning of the treatment or at the end restoring possible mucogingival problems that may arise.
