Lecture: Clinical guidelines for the orthodontic treatment of patients with advanced periodontitis
Periodontitis is the most serious dental pathology affecting a significant proportion of individuals worldwide, making it the major reason for tooth loss in adults. Advanced periodontitis often has significant consequences to oral health due to this loss of teeth and periodontal attachment (labial and lateral tooth displacement, loss of posterior support), which require additional interventions after the active phase of periodontal treatment is completed. Recently, the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has formulated clinical guidelines for the treatment of stage IV periodontitis focusing on the application of complex multidisciplinary therapeutic approaches, including orthodontic therapy, required for the treatment/rehabilitation of patients with tooth loss and its associated consequences. The lecture will present the specific guidelines and final recommendations for orthodontic tooth movement and maintenance of treatment outcome in adult patients with severe and advanced (stage IV) periodontitis, based on existing evidence and expert consensus.
